Humber Zero

Humber Zero is an industry-led project to remove up to eight million tonnes of CO2 annually by 2030 from the Immingham industrial site and create a low carbon future for the region.

It will integrate carbon capture and storage technology into some of the industrial processes at the combined heat and power plant at VPI Immingham and the adjacent Phillips 66 Humber Refinery. Post combustion, this CO2 is captured at source and transported via pipeline to storage fields in the North Sea.

The UK has committed to reducing carbon emissions to net zero by 2050. This can only be achieved by decarbonising existing industry effectively. Energy intensive industries account for more than 20% of the Humber’s economy and 1 in 10 jobs. Humber Zero is a project with immediate impact for reduced emissions, whilst preserving jobs in these critical industries and maintaining the Humber’s role as an industrial hub.

The £1.2-billion Humber Zero project is expected to create 2,500 jobs during construction, 200 permanent jobs, and safeguards 20,000 direct and indirect jobs on the River Humber’s south bank.

A further phase of the project aims to produce hydrogen at scale for immediate use and fuel switching from natural gas to hydrogen to decarbonise the Immingham industrial site.
