Hull City Council

Hull City Council has been at the forefront of tackling sustainability and climate change for decades. In 2019 we declared a climate emergency and set an ambitious target to be carbon neutral by 2030.  Our 2030 Carbon Neutral Strategy is key in shaping the work of the Council and we’re building on the wide range of partnerships that exist across the city to achieve this green ambition.

We’ve taken strong action to reduce our business carbon emissions – decreasing these by 54%. We’re a lead council in electric vehicle replacement; our current programme will see the fleet decarbonised by 2030 and we’ve increased the number of public charge points in the city centre. We support SME businesses to reduce their carbon emissions too through our Hull Businesses Energy Efficiency Scheme .

Our investment in domestic property energy efficiency has been reducing fuel poverty and regenerating neighbourhoods for over 40 years. We’re committed to building climate change resilience, investing £50m into this including flood protection. Through the Living with Water Partnership we’ve taken significant steps to increase the resilience of the city to flooding as a result of climate change. In 2018 Hull was selected as one of the first five cities in the world to contribute to the development of a global water resilience framework to help cities better prepare for, and respond to, shocks to their water systems. Our selection in this initiative was due, at least in part, to Hull’s commitment and strategic approach to resilience.

Our future green projects include the development of a district heating network for the city centre and assessing the opportunities for solar energy generation including solar canopies for car parks.

Green energy is one of the city’s strengths and central to our economic vision for Hull. As well as ambitious plans for carbon neutrality our aim is for the city to be at the forefront of innovative, low carbon, climate resilient development. Making Hull one of the most sustainable and greenest cities to live, learn, play and work.
